Three friends— Jerome (the narrator), George, and Harris—living in London feel tired of their daily routine and believe they are suffering from various illnesses. After discussing several holiday options, they decide to take a boating trip up the River Thames for relaxation. They also take Jerome's mischievous dog, Montmorency, with them.
The journey begins with trouble as the trio struggle to pack their belongings. They argue about what is necessary, end up over-packing, and nearly forget half their essentials. Once on the river, their trip becomes a mixture of fun and chaos. They constantly quarrel over rowing and steering the boat, get lost several times, and struggle with setting up tents. Even cooking simple meals becomes a challenge, as shown in the hilarious scene where they try and fail to open a tin of pineapple without a can opener.
Montmorency, the lively dog, creates further problems by attacking kettles, getting in the way, and causing scenes at every stop. The friends also face unpredictable weather—one moment enjoying sunny skies, the next battling rainstorms. Despite these problems, they share moments of laughter, enjoy the beautiful river scenery, and reflect on England's history as they pass through villages and landmarks.
After days of mishaps and constant discomfort, the friends finally give up on the trip when the rain becomes unbearable. They decide to head back to London, where they end the journey in the warmth of a comfortable restaurant. Though they laugh about their troubles, they also realize how much they enjoyed each other's company.
Happiness is found not in reaching the destination, but in the laughter and memories made along the journey.

کئی دن کی مشکلات اور مسلسل تکلیف کے بعد، جب بارش ناقابلِ برداشت ہو گئی تو انہوں نے سفر ختم کرنے کا فیصلہ کیا اور واپس لندن آ گئے، جہاں ایک آرام دہ ریسٹورنٹ میں بیٹھ کر سفر ختم کیا۔ اگرچہ وہ اپنے مسائل پر ہنستے رہے، مگر یہ بھی سمجھ گئے کہ اصل خوشی منزل تک پہنچنے میں نہیں، بلکہ سفر کے دوران بننے والی یادوں اور ہنسی میں ہے۔
