A curious and spiritual boy named Pi grows up in Pondicherry, India, where his father runs a zoo. Pi develops a deep interest in animals and practices Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam, much to the bewilderment of his religious teachers. When political unrest forces the family to move to Canada, they board a Japanese cargo ship carrying zoo animals. A violent storm sinks the ship, leaving Pi the sole human survivor on a lifeboat.
On the lifeboat, Pi finds himself with a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena, and the Bengal tiger Richard Parker. The hyena kills the zebra and orangutan, then Richard Parker kills the hyena—leaving Pi and the tiger alone.
Realizing that survival depends on asserting control, Pi constructs a raft and tames Richard Parker using a whistle, establishing boundaries and routines that allow them to coexist. He catches fish, collects rainwater, and endures storms, hunger, and isolation, all while relying on his faith and resolve.
They discover a seemingly paradisiacal, algae-covered island inhabited by meerkats—but it turns out to be carnivorous, dissolving living things at night. Realizing its danger, Pi escapes with Richard Parker and washes ashore on a Mexican beach.
Rescued, Pi recounts two versions of his ordeal to skeptical officials—one involving animals, another with human counterparts. He leaves the choice to the listener, saying that truth is what brings meaning.
True meaning lies in how we choose to perceive our reality, not in the facts themselves.
