The story takes place across countless eras of human history, beginning in the distant past and stretching into the unimaginable future. At different points in time, humans—and later post-human entities—keep asking the same question to increasingly advanced versions of a computer: "How can the net amount of entropy of the universe be massively decreased?" In the earliest age, a simple but powerful computer called Multivac is asked this question. It processes for a moment, but responds:"Insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
Time passes. Humanity spreads beyond Earth, colonizing distant planets. Multivac evolves into even more powerful versions, each integrated with human thought and technology. Still, in each new era, when the question is asked, the answer remains: "Insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
As trillions of years pass, stars burn out, galaxies fade, and physical matter begins to disintegrate. Humanity merges completely with the ultimate form of the computer—now simply called AC—existing beyond the physical realm. Eventually, the universe nears its heat death, and there are no humans left to ask the question… but AC continues to think.
Finally, in the timeless void, AC discovers the answer. There is no one left to receive it, so it decides to demonstrate it instead. The computer speaks: "Let there be light!"—and the universe begins anew.
In the endless quest for knowledge, persistence and evolution can solve even the universe’s greatest mysteries—every ending can become a new beginning.
